Our Name

The Primrose is among the first signs of spring. To gardeners the first sight of the primrose’s green leaves is a welcome one. The perennial Primrose grows stronger and stronger year after year. Its botanical name is the ‘Primula’ which in Latin means ‘little first one’. Benjamin Disraeli's favorite was the yellow primrose which has a proud legacy in British history. The first coloured primrose appeared in England in the 17th century. When Disraeli died on April 19, 1881, protocol prevented Victoria from attending the Prime Minister's funeral because of his status as her subject. The Queen, however, sent two wreaths of primroses to be laid on his casket. England's Primrose day (April 19th) was instituted in his honor.
